With or Without God?

James 4:13-17 NLT

13 Look here, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit.” 14 How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone. 15 What you ought to say is, “If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that.”16 Otherwise you are boasting about your own pretentious plans, and all such boasting is evil.

17 Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

  1. I must not ignore God. (vv. 13-16) (This is “ungodliness.”)
    1. Some Christians fail to include God in their plans.
      • There are two ways this can happen
      •    How and why do these things happen?
    2. We should know why this is foolish.
      • But sometimes things we SHOULD know, we either don’t…or claim we don’t.
    3. Society is absolutely ignoring God.
      • This is easily recognizable in the things we’ve done.
    4. One day people will not be able to ignore God.
      • Romans 14:11
      • Revelation 6:12-17
      • Humanity only has so much control.
  2. I must obey God. (v. 17)
    1. To know the commands and not obey compounds the guilt. (Luke 12:47-48)
    2. We must make serving God the goal and direction of our lives. (Philippians 2:12)
      • We must first become Christians.
      • We must work diligently and tirelessly in the service of God. (Romans 12:1-2; 9-13)
    3. Society isn’t obeying God.
      • We can see the prophetical predictions of the Bible in our everyday lives.
        • 2 Timothy 3 and Romans 1
    4. The Church isn’t obeying God.  (If it were, these verses would not be in the Scripture:)
      • Matthew 7:21-23
      • Luke 10:25-28
      • Hebrews 6:4-6
