The People of God Will Resist!

By Kris Robinson

Dan. 11:2-35

One of my favorite quotes from the comic-book character Captain America, comes from the Civil War: The Amazing Spiderman series, in which he confronts Spiderman regarding the White House decision to enact the Super Hero Registration Act:

“Doesn’t matter what the press says. Doesn’t matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn’t matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right.

This nation was founded on one principle above all else: The requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world — “No, YOU move.

~ J. Michael Straczynski, Civil War: The Amazing Spider-Man ~

In context, whatever decision the superheroes make will forever change the societal status of super heroes and tear apart the super hero community.  In the Captain America: Civil War movie, this is an implied storyline; doesn’t go into the depths the comics do and the movie has a different twist, overshadowing it.

Similarly, I believe that the Word confronts Christians to stand for what they believe in; for example:

Dan. 11:32b (NIV) – “…but the people who know their God will firmly resist him.”

In literary context, Daniel’s prophecy is speaking of a person (the ‘him’) known later to us as Antiochus Epiphanes; and if you were to read 1 Maccabees, you would get confirmation on this fact.  However, if you look at what the trajectory of this text is pointing to, we see similar words echoed by James; referring to a different ‘him’:

James 4:7 (NIV) – “Submit yourselves then, to God.  Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

So, what are these two men saying?  Isn’t it the same thing?

It points to the question, what does it mean to submit oneself to God?

If you have submitted to God, wouldn’t you know Him?

Someone once said that “Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks.  God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” (John 4:23-24)

That ‘someone’ was Jesus and He was saying that God seeks those who submit themselves to Him, who want to know Him, who believe He is Truth and that they have His Spirit within them so that they operate from Power, able to resist whatever Satan does thus causing him to flee and not us!

Aren’t you tired of trying to resist on your own? Wouldn’t you rather send ‘him’ (Satan) packing?

So then, who is God to you?

Remember that river of truth Cap. Mentions?  The prophet Jeremiah knew exactly what he was talking about!

Jer. 17:7-8 (NIV) – “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
