Daniel 3

A Fearful Fire

By Kris Robinson

Emphasizing Dan. 3:12-18; Is. 43:1-2 & Col. 1:15

“Weren’t there three men that we threw into the fire?”  Not your everyday question; or at least it shouldn’t be!  However, when you are an Idolatrous King bent on showing people ‘what’s up’ and that you’ll be worshiped or else, it is a question you ask (Dan. 3:24).

At the end of the second chapter of the book of Daniel, Daniel finishes revealing the king’s dream to him, settling the king down, and stopping him from killing anymore people; at least for the time being.  However, the king being so distraught, then enveloped in Daniel’s interpretation, must have missed the part about a rock smashing the statue to pieces (Dan. 2:44-45), so he logically decides to build a statue and command everyone to fall down and worship the image or else!

Which brings us to the infamous blazing furnace story  (Dan. 3:12-18).  Three men stand against idol worship;  Meshach, Shadrach & Abednego, when the time to worship the statue came about, choose not to fall to their knees, and instead stand for their God.

Back in January I blogged about a promise that holds true in our ‘blazing furnace’ situations (Victory Over Fear).  And, just last week (Who do you rely on?) I asked the question; who do you rely on in when the situations or circumstances are against you?

You see, there is a pattern developing:

God is in Control!  Our only worship is to be directed to the One who is the true and full image of God – Jesus Christ (Col. 1:15)

We all struggle with the temptation to worship the idols of contemporary culture: Material possessions, addictions, relationships, higher education, success, entertainment, busyness, pleasure and much more that subtly engages our hearts & minds.  Like the three Hebrews, we are called to resist worshiping anything except God (Ex. 20:1-11).  But, are we prepared to do so to the point of death?  As American Christians, we are rarely confronted with that question; but think about what Christ did, shouldn’t we do the same for others as He did for us?

Put a different way, upon reviewing his schemes to trip up those who are opposed to him, does Satan see the Son of Man showing up in our ‘blazing-furnace’ stories?  Shouldn’t he?
